Helpful Hints and Checklist for Moving Home

At ER Moves Removals we have many years’ experience in helping customers to moving
home. We know that the process of moving home can be extremely stressful, but did you know
that there are some helpful hints that you can follow which will make the process a total
breeze?

THREE WEEKS BEFORE THE MOVE:

  1. Book your removal company: it’s important to try and give them as much notice as
    possible
  2. Give notice to your landlord, if applicable: if you live in a rented property, you now
    need to give notice to the landlord
  3. Start decluttering: empty the loft and your cupboards and dispose of any unwanted
    items, or donate them to charity
  4. Get organised for packing up your house: start collecting moving boxes, and things like
    old newspapers and bubble wrap which will be important for wrapping fragile items like
    glassware
  5. Prepare a packing kit: get a stock of scissors and pens so that they are easily available
    when you start packing
  6. Write an inventory: it’s a good idea to put together a record of the belongings that you
    are moving and removal company can check that everything goes on the van
  7. Arrange for deliveries: if you are having new furniture delivered like a sofa or
    dining table, you’ll need confirm your new address with the company. It’s also a good
    idea to ensure that delivery takes place a day or two after you move, just in case of
    any problems

ONE WEEK BEFORE THE MOVE:

    1. Start packing: now’s the time to start packing up your belongings – going room by
      room is probably the easiest and most efficient way to do this. Make sure you clearly
      label your boxes  so then the movers can put them in the right room on moving day.
    2. Notify people of your new address: send a card to your family and friends to let them
      know you’re moving home
    3. Cancel subscriptions: this applies to things such as newspapers and magazines, or
      notify companies of your new address if you wish to carry them on when you move.
    4. Book a cleaning company: they will come to your house before you move, ensuring
      that it is as clean and tidy for the new owners as possible
    5. Arrange care for children and pets: little people and furry friends can unfortunately add
      an extra level of stress on moving day, so it is best to arrange for someone to look
      after them and you’re able to focus on the job in hand
    6. Book accommodation: if you’re not able to get into your new house on the same day
      you move out, you’ll need to book yourself somewhere to stay in the meantime
    7. Book a parking space outside your new house: if parking is difficult, you will need to
      advise your neighbours or the police that you want to reserve a parking space outside
      of your the property on moving day
    8. Organise your transport: will you go to your new house in your car, or will you need a
      separate van for some extra storage space?

THE DAY BEFORE YOU MOVE:

    1. Final clean: empty the fridge, defrost the freezer and clean bathrooms
    2. Final check of cupboards: this is important to make sure that things aren’t left behind
    3. Put a box aside with your kettle, tea bags, mugs, toilet roll and cleaning products in it:
      keep this somewhere handy on moving day, as we’re sure you’ll need it as soon as
      you get to your new house!
    4. Keep black bin bags handy: just in case you need to wrap any items at the last
      minute, or need something to transport last minute items in
    5. Pack an overnight bag for all of your family members: this should include things like
      toiletries, phone chargers, a change of clothes and nightwear
    6. Buy snacks for moving day: treats like biscuits and sweets will help to keep everyone
      going during the move
    7. Find out some takeaway numbers for your new house: we’re sure you won’t feel like
      cooking at the end of moving day!

ON MOVING DAY:

  1. Take your children and pets to the person that is looking after them
  2. Strip bedding from your beds: put this in large removal boxes, ready to put on your beds
    when they are reassembled in your new house
  3. Take your utility meter readings: this will be important to ensure that you are charged
    correctly on your final bills
  4. Meet your removal team: explain what items need to be left behind
  5. Do a final check to make sure nothing is left behind, then wave goodbye to your
    house!
